A Creative Crown Project

Black hairstyles have been politicized across history, often subjected to discriminatory policies aimed at exerting control over Black bodies. From the enforced adoption of Eurocentric hairstyles during colonial times to contemporary workplace discrimination, the regulation of Black hair serves as a stark reminder of systemic racism and the enduring struggle for equality. Nevertheless, within the Black community, hair emerges as a powerful symbol of resistance and cultural pride.

A Creative Crown Project resonates profoundly with legislative efforts such as the CROWN Act and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. We seek to promote inclusivity for Black hair culture by teaching young people about U.S. laws committed to social justice and equality. We celebrate the beauty of Black hair culture, as well as, advocate for greater recognition and respect for its political significance in the fight against racial discrimination and injustice. Join us on this journey of discovery, celebration, and empowerment as we come together to honor the beauty and significance of Black hair culture.
